Dashboard of Nascar data for the 2023 season
Today we look at Nascar data from the 2023 season. The season consisted of thirty-six races with at least twenty stock cars each race. I recently watched the recent season of Full Speed on Netflix; which was an in-depth view into the 2023 race season. This season is very much the same as the F1, Tour de France and PGA Netflix companions that followed their respective seasons.
I wanted to create a dashboard that gave the user the opportunity to view season performance for every race while still giving the opportunity to view a drivers’ specific statistics for that season. So when planning this visualization; I wanted to create/develop the following items/functions:
- Two-part dashboard that visualizes individual driver status while still having views into the season in total
- Using parameters to change the driver; I wanted to create different backgrounds (color gradients) so when you choose a different driver, its corresponding background changes
- Utilize dashboard actions to highlight selected drivers in the complete season stat visuals
- Incorporate images as shapes to show driver headshots, car profile and manufacturers

One thing I noticed when I was playing with the color gradients was that background itself is essentially multiple bars with varying degree of colors. So using these sheets as the dashboard background could be a confusing functionality because you can still click and isolate each bar in the total gradient background. In order to bypass this visual hurdle I used the color gradients as ’tiled’ containers and all other containers that contained visuals were ‘floating’ containers above the background. This allowed me to continue to build on top of the backgrounds while eliminating the possibility for a user to click some background real estate and disrupt the aesthetic view of it.
I created a parameter calc that basically filtered the driver stats when the parameterized driver is selected. The filter calc itself results in a T/F outcome; I also use this filter in the complete season stats views to call-out/isolate the driver in the busy season visuals where all drivers are present.
I had a lot of fun building these views; I learned how to incorporate tiled and floating containers together to complete a suite of visuals that not only tells a performance story but allows users to spotlight a single driver and their respective stats throughout the season.
