A Tableau view of driving statistics during the 2023 PGA season.
Data Used: PGA Website has data for all pertinent statistics for each player/event. For this post, I used driving statistics for all players in the PGA data portal for the 2023 tournament season.
Credit: I wanted to visualize driving statistics by showing the average drive for each player identified in the PGA Data Store. The following blog post was instrumental in plotting driving (off-the-tee) stats for all players.
The above blog post helped me in visualizing the top portion of the dashboard while I also wanted to supplement the main visual with a bar chart and scatter plot to provide additional data elements. I used a parameter to drive the color of the bottom views; parameter gives the user the opportunity to change colored measures among some measures (i.e. Top 10 Finishes, Earnings, Fairway Accuracy %, etc.)
I finally added a dashboard highlight action and gif (via image functionality) to add some personal creativity to the dashboard created.

Immediate Insights Derived:
- Scottie Scheffler amassed the most Top 10 Finishes in the season which also yielded the most earnings when reviewing total earnings for the season
- Total Distance player does not necessarily correlate to success on the golf course, you have to assess other measures like accuracy and fairway in regulation. Just because you are long off the tee does not necessarily mean you are able to land in safe areas of the respective course. An accurate drive is more attractive than a long drive in most cases.
- By looking at the bottom right scatter plot; you can see how earnings are much higher as you progress higher on drive accuracy; having an accurate first stroke gives the player the advantage to place themselves in a safe spot to continue the hole.
- Top driving player of the season also resulted in a very low driving accuracy which is safe to insinuate that his drives placed him in areas of the course that had tough lies to continue the hole in (rough, out-of-bounds, sand). Unless, you are great at recovery shots, then you are able to risk accuracy in those situations.
