Getting To Know Alteryx

I just downloaded Alteryx (the trial version)! Let’s snoop around.

Above is the layout I get when Alteryx loads. I placed some box call-outs in the screenshot above to discuss.

  • Tool Palate: Here is where you can see the many tools that Alteryx has to offer; ranging from a variety of functions like data extract tools; data output tools; transformation, prep, join, spatial and many more
  • Configuration Window: offers you options for any activated/selected tool
  • Workflow Design Canvas: This is where your current work will appear; utilizing a drag and drop operation, you can connect all various tools to build your workflow
  • Results Window: Displays data when you select a certain tool in your workflow; you can also toggle between the data and the respective metadata for what is shown

Initial Thoughts

I like that when navigating around the tool palate; Alteryx gives you examples of each tool in use.

For those that learn more efficiently just trying things, this is a great way to go. Submerse yourself into the various examples that all the tools offer to get an accurate representation of what is executed.

You can also take advantage of the many online tutorials that Alteryx has to offer through its learning portal community. The official name is called Maveryx Academy and you can run through online learning paths to learn all the many things that Alteryx can help with.

Check out the video below as I go through some main tools that I started using when I started playing around with Alteryx.
