How many of you have been caught in that never ending cycle of submitting resumes during your job search? You find yourself in stuck in a numbers game; working hard to send so many resumes to only get a fraction of those submissions returned with a call for an interview.

However, you don’t stop there…, you tap into your professional network asking for some credible recommendations. I for one am not a stranger when it comes to utilizing your network to get potential job interviews. Just how a resume is a document of your skills and accolades throughout your present professional career; networking also proves to be a significant part of your job search tool belt.

Which is why we’re here today to discuss how you can transform your resume word document into an interactive resume via tableau. My hope is that you’re able to read this post and come away with some useful tips and/or motivation to add this shiny new tool to your professional tool belt.
Years ago when I was in the middle of my professional job hunt, I found myself in the cyclical pattern of submitting resumes to various queues of recruiters. I always felt there was more to say than what I had on my CV. As a professional in the data analytics field, I felt that my CV was not really giving folks the full picture of who I am or better yet what my brand is. I was already hitting the perceived limits of what I wanted to note in my resume. We all know the societal perceived tip of ‘make sure your resume is one-page’. While I agree with that, what do professionals do as they get matured in their career? How many times can you play around with font sizes and margins? I decided to extend my brand by offering an interactive resume on my tableau public profile.
This had many potential benefits to my professional career:
- Utilize your resume document to highlight your top accolades, while your interactive resume can show everything that describes your accomplishments
- Increase awareness to your Tableau Public profile by adding a hyperlink to your CV; this gives those diligent recruiters the opportunity to visit and learn more about you
- Data job? Perfect! Show them immediately what you can do in a visualization tool like Tableau what you can do. FLEX YOUR SKILLS!
- Showcase different styles of Tableau functionalities in your resume (collection of bar graphs, word maps, tabular, etc.)
- Strengthen your brand by showcasing your skills and professional worth on a new platform
Check out the layout of my interactive resume:

- Name, Headshot, URL links (via images) to my LinkedIn profile and mail to hyperlink
- My objective statement
- Timeline of my Education and Professional Experience (via bar graph over time)
- Technical skills competency via radio buttons
- Certifications and/or Tech Training completed (tabular)
- Additional Skills (word cloud)
Above is my current version on my Tableau Public profile, I went ahead and pinned this on my profile page. If anyone were to get navigated to my page from my LinkedIn profile, this visualization will be the first one they see. I like that I can include the use of my professional headshot and image URL buttons. I also tried to include different types of visuals to show the audience that I am familiar with the various things you can do with Tableau.
If you are in the data analytics field, I strongly urge you to create an interactive version immediately. That will only make your professional brand that much stronger and versatile.
Please let me know what you think, feedback is always welcomed. What what you do differently? Have one already? Share it with me, would love to see it.
